Garnett Street Station is one of the oldest buildings in Henderson’s Central Business Historic District
Our History
Built in 1901 for the Seaboard Airline Railroad, which had merged with the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad in 1900, the 200 X 40 foot brick building replaced the original freight station located on the corner of Montgomery and Garnett streets, which burned sometime after 1882. Lewis Reavis originally owned the land, which he deeded to the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad in1837. Garnett Street Station is one of the oldest buildings in Henderson’s Central Business Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The building was constructed of 1:5 common bond brick, probably made nearby, joined with lime putty mortar. The wood loading platforms were constructed of 2-inch oak on the north façade of the building. The original building featured segmentally arched loading doors on each side of the building, which enabled freight to be unloaded from the trains, carried through the building, and loaded onto trucks parked on the street side.
The station master’s quarters were located on the west end of the building, facing Montgomery Street, and featured a hooded entrance with concrete steps, 12-foot ceilings, large double-hung windows, and walls of bead board. The original station master’s desk remains a focal point of the current office space.
The building continued to be used as a freight depot until the mid-1980’s.
Purchased from CSX Transportation, Inc. in September, 1988 by Restoration Associates of Henderson, the building was restored and re-named Garnett Street Station. Exterior restorations preserved the history and architectural integrity of the building and very few changes were made to the façade. The original arched doors were enclosed with glass and the original massive wood doors were preserved and permanently attached to the interior walls. A large entrance deck and canopies were installed to the exterior on the street side of the building. Inside the building, walls and partitions were installed to create five office suites, which could be entered from a central corridor.
The restored and renovated building opened in the summer of 1989, and featured what became a popular downtown restaurant, Blondie’s Café, on the east end of the building.
The office suites were later expanded to eight, which featured connecting doors that allowed tenants to enlarge their spaces as needed.
The building was acquired on June 10, 2019 from Restoration Associates by the newly formed limited liability company, Garnett Street Station, LLC, a subsidiary of Triangle North Healthcare Foundation.
Triangle North Healthcare Foundation currently leases office space in the building’s Suite A, which is the original station master’s quarters.
Restoration and renovations are currently underway to preserve the brick, restore the façade, preserve the character and architecture of the building, and ultimately, to ensure this iconic treasure will stand firmly in the city’s center for many generations to come.
